A story of innovation and growth.
Before we get started and dive into the fascinating world of Ecovative, let’s rewind 16 years. Plastic was king, and sustainability was often just a buzzword. But then, enter Even and Gavin, two students attending an inventor studio class at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. They soon discovered the potential of the root of fungus and that it could be much more than just nature’s decomposer – it could be the solution to our plastic problem. This revelation sparked a journey that would redefine sustainable practices and change the game.
Goodbye harmful plastics, Hello biodegradable alternatives.
As Ecovative got off the ground, they created their first sustainable alternative for plastic packaging; Mushroom Packaging. Not only can this fungi-based packaging protect whatever is being shipped, but afterward it can be used as compost for your backyard. A win-win for our planet and your wallet.
But the story doesn’t end there. What began as an eco-conscious alternative to plastic packaging quickly sprouted into a full-fledged movement. The creatives behind Ecovative discovered that their AirMycelium Technology could be used to create much more, creating an impressive portfolio of products From mycelium-based building materials to Forager™ hides (a leather alternative), single-use beauty products, MyForest Food’s™ mycelium bacon, and a range of whole-food, meat-free ingredients. The big shift here is clear – a move towards circularity.
